☀️ Light Mapping

Follow the Journey of Sunlight

Discover how light shapes the places we know.

Choose a favorite indoor or outdoor space and watch how sunlight changes throughout the day. Sketch, trace, photograph, or map where light and shadow appear, then return later to see how the landscape has transformed.

Every ray of sunlight tells a different story.

🌱 You’ll Need

Bring:

  • Sketchbook or drawing paper

  • Pencil and eraser

  • Colored pencils, crayons, or watercolor (optional)

  • Clipboard (optional)

  • Camera or phone (optional)

  • Compass (optional)

  • Favorite outdoor or indoor observation spot

  • Curiosity and patience

✨ Create

1 • Choose Your Place

Find a place you enjoy returning to.

It might be:

  • A sunny window

  • Your backyard

  • A favorite tree

  • A garden

  • A park bench

  • A porch

  • A playground

  • A classroom window

Sit quietly for a moment before you begin.

2 • Map the Light

Sketch your space simply.

Draw where sunlight falls.

Notice:

  • Bright areas

  • Deep shadows

  • Reflections

  • Dappled light beneath trees

  • Shapes created by branches or leaves

You don’t need artistic perfection—you’re mapping what you notice.

3 • Add Color & Time

Use colors or symbols to record:

☀️ Full Sun

🌤 Partial Sun

🌳 Shade

✨ Reflections

🕒 Time of day

Add arrows showing the direction the sunlight is traveling.

4 • Return Later

Visit the same place again.

Compare your new observations.

How has the sunlight changed?

Add another layer to your map using different colors or notes.

Watch your map become a record of movement through time.

5 • Reflect & Share

Give your Light Map a title.

Display it beside a window or in your nature journal.

Compare your map with someone else’s.

Together, notice how every person experiences light a little differently.

👀 Notice

As you observe, pay attention to:

  • The movement of shadows

  • Changes in brightness

  • Colors that appear in sunlight

  • Light reflecting from water, windows, or leaves

  • Warm and cool places

  • Tiny details that become visible in changing light

💭 Wonder

  • Why do shadows move?

  • Where does the sunlight come from at different times of day?

  • Why do leaves create patterns of light?

  • Which places stay sunny the longest?

  • How does weather change the way light feels?

  • What stories could this place tell through its changing light?

🌎 Connect

Light shapes every landscape. It helps plants grow, guides the rhythms of animals, warms the Earth, and transforms familiar places from morning to evening.

By returning to the same place and observing carefully, we begin to notice patterns that are easy to overlook. Light Mapping invites us to slow down and experience our surroundings as living places that are always changing.

Each map becomes a record of a moment in relationship with the sun, the seasons, and the place we call home.

🌈 Try Another Way

  • Create a sunrise and sunset map.

  • Visit after rain and observe reflections.

  • Compare sunny and cloudy days.

  • Trace the shadow of one tree every hour.

  • Use watercolor to paint areas of light.

  • Create a seasonal light map in spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

  • Make a family light map together and compare observations.

❤️ Tiny Action • Big Impact

Spend five quiet minutes watching sunlight before reaching for a screen.

The more we notice the rhythms of the natural world, the more connected we become to the places we care for.

📸 Share

Photograph your Light Map alongside the place you observed.

Return throughout the year and create a collection that shows how light changes with the seasons.

Invite friends or family to map the same place and discover how each person notices something unique.
